Nga Waka Chardonnay 2020
$28.00 inc. GST
Our Nga Waka Chardonnay is 100% barrel fermented in tight-grain French oak barriques, 20% of which are new. The wine spends 10 months in barrel and is lees-stirred monthly.
A rich, complex Martinborough Chardonnay showing intense ripe stone fruit flavours underpinned by subtle spicy oak, malolactic and barrel fermentation characters, enhanced by a silky palate texture and a elegant lingering finish.
4.5 stars – Michael Cooper
This consistently rewarding wine offers top value. Already enjoyable, the 2020 vintage (4.5*) was fermented and matured for 10 months in French oak barriques (20 per cent new). Bright, light lemon/green, it is fragrant, full-bodied and sweet-fruited, with concentrated stone-fruit flavours, toasty notes adding complexity, finely balanced acidity and a slightly creamy, smooth finish. Drink now or cellar.
93 points – Bob Campbell MW
Full-flavoured, textural chardonnay with melon, grapefruit, lime-citrus and a touch of green apple. A crisp, vibrant and quite weighty wine that would benefit from a year or two in the bottle.
94 points – Cam Douglas MS
Attractive bouquet of flowers and mineral, some oyster shell and ripe white fleshed stone fruits. There’s a layer of oak with a raw cashew nut butter scent and over finesse and charm. Youthful, fresh and delicious on the palate – dry with flavours of citrus and tree fruits, a core of minerality, a touch of gun-flint and mix of new and used barrel. Great acid line, a sense of place and time leading to long salivating finish. Best drinking from late 2022 through 2028+.
5 Stars – Sam Kim, Wine Orbit
It’s wonderfully fruited and delightfully complex with apricot, vanillin oak, roasted hazelnut and brioche characters. The generously expressed palate displays excellent weight and rounded mouthfeel, beautifully complemented by creamy texture and splendidly pitched acidity, finishing long and smooth. At its best: now to 2026
